Why visit

Lake Manyara National Park

Nestled at the base of the dramatic Great Rift Valley Escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is a compact mosaic of ecosystems that Ernest Hemingway once hailed as the "loveliest in Africa." This biodiverse sanctuary transitions seamlessly from a lush, jungle-like groundwater forest, home to massive troops of olive baboons and ancient mahogany trees to expansive acacia woodlands and the shimmering, alkaline shores of the lake itself. Its proximity to Arusha makes it an essential first stop on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, offering a tranquil yet vibrant introduction to the region's natural wonders.

The park is most famous for its legendary tree-climbing lions, a rare behavioral phenomenon that sees these predators lounging high in the branches of umbrella acacia trees. Beyond the lions, the park is a world-class birding destination where thousands of pink flamingos often blanket the lake's edge alongside pelicans and storks. For those seeking adventure beyond the traditional game drive, Lake Manyara offers unique experiences like the Treetop Walkway, a 370-meter suspended canopy trail, night safaris to spot elusive nocturnal creatures, and visits to the steaming Maji Moto hot springs.

Tree-Climbing Lions

Lake Manyara is one of the few places in Africa where you can witness the extraordinary sight of lions lounging high in the branches of acacia trees. While most big cats stay grounded, the prides here have adapted this unique behavior to escape the heat and irritating insects of the forest floor. Spotting a lion draped over a massive limb offers a rare and iconic photographic opportunity that defines the park’s wild character.

The Pink Lake & Birdlife

The park is an avian paradise, hosting over 400 bird species across its varied habitats. The centerpiece is the shallow alkaline lake, which often becomes a shimmering sea of pink when thousands of lesser flamingos arrive to feed. Along the shoreline, you’ll also find giant white pelicans, elegant storks, and cormorants, making it a premier destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Treetop Walkway & Groundwater Forest

For a unique perspective, the Manyara Treetop Walkway takes you 18 meters above the ground on a series of suspended bridges. This 370-meter trail winds through the lush canopy of the groundwater forest, allowing you to walk among ancient mahogany trees. It’s an immersive way to spot blue monkeys, hornbills, and butterflies at eye level while enjoying the serenity of the jungle from above.

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (June - October)

Expect clear, sunny skies and thinning vegetation, which makes it much easier to spot the park's famous tree-climbing lions and large elephant herds. As water sources inland dry up, wildlife congregates around the lake's edge, offering consistent and high-quality game viewing. This is the peak safari season, so while the weather is cool and pleasant, popular viewpoints and the Treetop Walkway can be busier.

Best for: Wildlife photography, spotting large mammals, and comfortable game drives.

Wet Season (November – May)

The park morphs into a verdant, tropical paradise as the rains nourish the groundwater forest and floodplains. While the thickened vegetation can make spotting big game like lions more of a challenge, the landscape becomes exceptionally picturesque with waterfalls cascading down the Rift Valley Escarpment

Best for: Peak birdwatching, flamingo spectacle, photography, canoeing

Game drives

Thrilling game drives through diverse habitats to find the park's legendary tree-climbing lions lounging high in acacia branches. You’ll encounter massive elephant herds, troops of playful baboons, and graceful giraffes, all within a compact area that guarantees high-density wildlife sightings in a single afternoon.

What to expect on your safari

Birdwatching

Whether you are a seasoned birder or a casual observer, you'll be captivated by over 400 avian species, including giant pelicans and colorful kingfishers, creating a vibrant, ever-changing natural masterpiece.

Explore by Night

Elevate your adventure on the Manyara Treetop Walkway, a suspended canopy trail that puts you at eye-level with monkeys and birds. For a truly unique perspective, join a night game drive to discover the park’s elusive nocturnal creatures or take to the water in a canoe for a serene, close-up encounter with wallowing hippos.
