Overview
Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania's most underrated safari destinations - a 2,850 square kilometer wilderness that offers an intimate and authentic African safari experience. Named after the Tarangire River that flows through it, the park becomes a vital lifeline during the dry season, drawing wildlife from miles around.
Famous for its spectacular elephant herds - some of the largest in Africa - Tarangire is home to over 3,000 of these gentle giants. The landscape is equally iconic, dotted with ancient baobab trees that tower over the savannah like natural monuments. With over 550 bird species and a rich diversity of wildlife, Tarangire combines incredible game viewing with stunning scenery in a less crowded setting.
Experiences & Highlights

Massive Elephant Herds
Tarangire is often called "Elephant Paradise," featuring herds of up to 300 elephants gathered around the river, particularly during the dry season.

Iconic Baobab Trees
Marvel at centuries-old baobab trees - some over 1,000 years old - that dominate the landscape. These iconic "upside-down trees" create stunning photographic opportunities at golden hour.

The Tarangire River
Serving as the park's primary water source, the river attracts huge concentrations of wildlife, including wildebeest, zebra, eland, and buffalo during the dry season.
Best Time to Visit
Dry Season (June - October)
The absolute best time for wildlife viewing. Massive concentrations of elephants, zebras, wildebeest, and other animals gather along the Tarangire River—the only permanent water source. Wildlife viewing rivals or exceeds the Serengeti during these months.
Best for: Elephant herds, wildlife concentration, predator sightings
Green Season (November - May)
The park transforms into a lush paradise perfect for bird watching. Over 550 bird species, including dozens of migratory birds, can be spotted. The landscape is verdant and beautiful, though animals are more dispersed.
Best for: Bird watching, photography, fewer visitors, lower rates
What to expect on your safari
Diverse Safari Activities
Beyond traditional game drives, Tarangire offers guided walking safaris and night drives (seasonal) for a more immersive experience. Get up close to wildlife on foot with experienced guides or spot nocturnal animals after dark.
Intimate Safari Camps
Stay in smaller, boutique camps and lodges that offer a more personal safari experience. Many camps overlook the river or swamps, providing front-row seats to the wildlife action from the comfort of your accommodation.
Bird Watching Paradise
With over 550 recorded bird species, Tarangire is one of East Africa's premier birding destinations. Spot everything from colorful bee-eaters and hornbills to massive Kori bustards and rare endemics. Perfect for both casual observers and serious ornithologists.
